I have come to realize that almost all of my photographs are about freedom and connection—the simplest of concepts, childlike.

In Havana, I often passed this playground. The freedoms of childhood have no boundary, and the value of connections is clearly implied.

So much of my work is a mirror of childhood trauma, or of living in the fantasy world all children create around them, often in spite of the potential chaos surrounding them.

Between the ages of 6–12, kids are often living in their imaginations more than at any other time.

These are all photographs from my Cuba work, yet also part of my never-ending Daydreamer series, capturing moments of youthful self-absorption.

Pablo Picasso said it best: “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”
