ARLES MASTERCLASS
Join David Alan Harvey and Alejandra Martinez Moreno for a three-day immersive masterclass during the Les Rencontres d'Arles.
“This intense shooting for 3 days will culminate in your slide show at my gallery space in Arles on Friday night.”
- DAH
Designed as an intensive working experience, the program combines portfolio review, daily shooting in Arles, structured editing sessions, conversations, and critiques.
When: July 8 - 9 - 10
Where: Arles, France
Participants: 5 Student Limit.
Tuition: $ 1,000 USD
The masterclass opens with a portfolio review to understand each participant’s photographic direction, influences, and intentions. From there, mornings are dedicated to talks, presentations, and Q&A sessions covering visual storytelling, editing, sequencing, publishing, and the evolving landscape of contemporary photography and photobooks. Drawing on their experience with Burn Magazine and Burn.Books, David and Alejandra will share practical insight into how photographic projects are shaped, refined, and brought into publication.
Afternoons are devoted to photographing in Arles. Participants are encouraged to work independently or in small groups, responding intuitively to the city’s cultural depth, exhibitions, and atmosphere. The following day, this new work becomes the foundation for collective editing sessions where images are reviewed, discussed, and refined through critique and guidance.
The final day focuses on editing and reflection, alongside broader conversations about photography, sequencing, and bookmaking. Each participant receives individualized feedback designed to help clarify next steps in their practice — whether refining an ongoing project, strengthening an editing approach, pursuing publication, or defining a clearer creative direction moving forward.
Formal sessions conclude in the early afternoon of the third day, followed by a curated slideshow presentation of participants’ work.
Once we receive your registration, we will email you to schedule a brief introductory Zoom meeting with David and Alejandra prior to the workshop.

HARVEY
David Alan Harvey is a highly sought after mentor and teacher. His workshops are philosophical explorations into the heart of your work and motivation. They are about your own personal growth. A champion of authorship and voice he seeks out your personal obstacles and gives you a good shove to move yourself beyond them, then greets you with a high five and a beer on the other side. As anyone who has taken one of David’s workshops will tell you, once you take a workshop with him, you are essentially his student for life. He sticks with those who want to move ahead with their work for book publishing, gallery shows, etc. If you do the work, he will be there to help you push it forward.
“David’s workshops aren’t for the faint of heart or those who do not want to push through personal boundaries. He is part supporter, part instigator and all professional, delivering each comment at the precise moment and knowing confidently what he can get out of each student. I’ll never look through the viewfinder again without hearing his voice questioning why I’ve raised the camera at that moment and how I plan to tell the story.”
– Christopher Edwards
"Take David's workshop if you want to stop taking tourist photos. You'll never approach photography the same way again."
- Roddy MacLeod“David is one of the most insightful & inspiring teachers I have ever had. He is demanding but cares immensely about the work of his pupils. Throughout the workshop he encouraged us to push ourselves. I achieved some of my best work in his class.”
– Sandra Cattaneo Adorno
“David’s NYC workshop was the most incredible week for me. Not only did his guidance and opinions give my own judgement and understanding of what makes a great picture a well needed boost, we were privileged to meet some of his inspiring collaborators. I pushed my own work into new and exciting areas and upon my return to the UK, I purged my portfolio of many images I now deemed under par, surely the most telling evidence of the workshop’s effect on me.”
